Higher scores indicate higher 3-month mortality and greater transplant priority.

MELD 6-9 ≈ 2% mortality; 20-29 ≈ 20%; ≥ 40 ≈ 70%+.
Modern allocation systems use MELD 3.0 or MELD-Na variants.

Formula

MELD = 3.78×ln(bilirubin mg/dL) + 11.2×ln(INR) + 9.57×ln(creatinine mg/dL) + 6.43 (values floored at 1)
